UofSC's Annual Big Data Health Case Competition

My name is Audrey, and I am a project coordinator reaching out on behalf of the University of South Carolina's Big Data Health Science Center. We are hosting our third annual case competition, a virtual event in which students compete in teams to solve an issue in healthcare using big data analytics for a chance to win cash prizes, and we would love for the University of South Carolina-Columbia to be represented this year.

The 3rd Annual Big Data Health Science Case Competition will be held virtually between February 4th- 6th 2022 before the University of South Carolina’s National Big Data Health Science Conference, scheduled for February 11th - 12th 2022. Last year’s winner was Georgia Institute of Technology, so it is time for others to compete to dethrone them. The Big Data Case Competition is intended to provide enthusiastic teams of graduate and senior undergraduate students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the analysis of big datasets in healthcare. This year’s challenge will focus on solving the inappropriate use of healthcare using data science.

Each participating team will analyze the case and datasets. During this period, the teams must identify the most prominent issues associated with ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC) and develop a strategy to address key issues to help healthcare organizations achieve their goals of reducing inappropriate care utilization. Team members will work together to present their methods, analyses, and results at the Big Data Health Science Center Case Competition virtually. A panel of industry and academic experts will judge the presentations based on each team’s use of full analytics tools/processes, from framing the problem to data use, model building, innovation and communicating the solutions to decision-makers. More details about this event can be found in the flyer below. Please share this flyer with your students and faculty, and we look forward to hosting you!

UofSC's Big Data Health Summer Research Program

We are writing to you to seek your assistance in recruiting qualified pre-doctoral (masters and pre-dissertation graduate students) in the physical and quantitative sciences for the recently awarded NIH T35 grant (T35AI165252-01) short summer training program titled “Big Data Health Science Scholar Program for Infectious Diseases” program at UofSC. Eligible students should have completed at least 1 year in their graduate program with a GPA of 3.5 or better.

This program is designed to address the shortage of Big Data health science workforce and promote Big Data health science research at UofSC and beyond by introducing eligible students to the application of data science to infectious disease.

We plan to recruit eight (8) students each year who are interested in learning about how to apply data science to infectious disease related research. This is a 3-month, full-time (40 hours per week) program to work alongside established scientists on one or more Big Data Health-related studies. Each student trainee will be involved in a specific research project, actively participating in a hands-on manner in a research laboratory currently conducting studies related to Big Data Health Science.  More details about this program can be found in the flyer below. Please share this flyer with your students and faculty, and we look forward to hosting the students of the University of South Carolina-Columbia! Click here for more information.
