Code IT Academy Lab Assistant (2 Available)

We are seeking two enthusiastic individuals to provide programming instruction during our CodeIT Academy, scheduled for June 22 – 26, in Columbia, South Carolina. The lab assistants will be expected to assist academy participants in the development of projects for their assigned CodeIT partners. Participants will use programming resources to create widgets, mobile app prototypes, or interactive gaming experiences. Assistants should be able to answer general questions about the resources to help participants with their project completion. Minimum Requirements Associate degree in Computer Technology or related field; OR a minimum of two years working in the IT industry; Working knowledge of Java or comparable programming language; Familiarity with one or more of the following programming resources: Scratch, ALICE, MIT App Inventor. Tutoring or supplemental instruction experience, preferably in higher education is preferred, but not required. Must be available week of June 22 – 26, from 1pm – 5pm. Attendance at program orientation on April 24 is ideal, but not required.

Student Volunteers Needed for CodeDay Columbia

CodeDay is a hackathon-style event for high school students. The event takes place from noon to noon, May 23–24 at IT-oLogy. More info is at http://codeday.org/columbia. This is part of a national CodeDay effort, but is being organized locally by the folks who put on the Columbia TEDxYouth conference and our February CodeDay. The organizers are looking for a variety of different volunteers to serve as staff, coding coaches, trainers, chaperones, and judges. No coding expertise is required for several of these roles, but experienced programmers are needed as well. This would be a great opportunity for the AITP students, ACM students, PMI professionals, and others to serve as mentors for the high school students. We also need help in promoting the event to relevant audiences. The new Taulbee Survey is out for this year. As always, it contains everything you could possibly want to know about CS, CE degree enrollment, production, and employment in the US. One datapoint: enrollment in CS continues to grow, hitting the previous record set in 2000. And, yes, enrollment here has pretty much matched the national trend above.
