We have just published the new degree requirements for Computer Information System majors, effective Fall 2014, which include some significant changes to the major. As always, current CIS majors can elect to change to the new degree requirement but not before consulting with your academic advisor. Remember that if you change then you must satisfy all the new requirements, not just some. The changes include:

1. MATH 141, 142 have been replaced with MATH 122.
2. MATH 374 is replaced with MATH 174
3. STAT 509 is replaced with STAT 515 and STAT 516.
4. The required Minor in Business Information Management will now consist of the following required classes:
   • ECON 224 - Introduction to Economics
   • ACCT 222 - Introduction to Accounting
   • MGMT 371 - Principles of Management
   • MGSC 390 - Business Information Systems
   • MGSC 490 - Information Systems Analysis and Design
   • MGSC 590 - Information Systems Development
   plus, any two of the following courses:
   • ACCT 324: Survey of Commercial Law
   • ECON 311: Issues in Economics
   • ECON 379: Government Policy Toward Business
   • FINA 333: Finance and Markets
   • IBUS 301: Introduction to International Business
   • MGMT 472: Entrepreneurship and Small Business
   • MKTG 350: Introduction to Marketing
   • MKTG 351: Consumer Behavior
   • MGSC 395: Operations Management

The full degree requirements are at the Computer Information System degree page. We will allow students to substitute MATH 141 for MATH 122, and MATH 374 for MATH 174, and STAT 509 for for STAT 515. So, if you have already taken one of these classes and want to change to the new major you will still be able to use the class you already took.

There is still room for students to enroll in the Human-Computer Interaction course during the spring semester. It is currently listed as CSCE 590-001 but has recently been approved as a regular course with its own number. The only requirement is that you have upper division undergraduate or graduate standing. There is no math requirement and no specific programming expertise requirement. HCI is a bit different from a lot of the more traditional CSE courses. The emphasis is on designing and developing systems that people not only want to use but can use effectively. We’ll look at how research and development is handled in this area and explore a lot of new and innovative computer systems and interfaces. There will be several guest lectures, which are still being arranged. There will be a course project as well as some shorter assignments. You will have a lot of flexibility in designing your project, which could emphasize design, development, evaluation, or something even more imaginative. Our new faculty member, Dr. Jenay Beer, will present the lectures during the first week while I am out of town and will then visit the class on a regular basis. Next fall she will be teaching a course on Robot-Computer Interaction, and this spring course will provide an excellent lead-in to what should be an exciting new course. Now undergraduate students can take up to 12 graduate hours of course work and receive both undergraduate and graduate credit for those 12 hours. The credits can be applied to the student's baccalaureate program and with graduate program admission applied to a graduate program. With this change, students in the Accelerated Masters program having earned 12 graduate credits only need 18 more graduate credits after Bachelors to earn a Masters degree.

Advisement will run from October 21 to November 1. You can find out who your advisor is at my.sc.edu. You can then contact them to setup an advisement appointment, or drop by their office to setup the appointment. Registration appointments will be sent to the students by the Registrar through my.sc.edu. Undergraduate early registration begins the week of November 11th. Open registration starts November 18th.

It has been arranged for tutors from the Student Success Center to serve our students on Monday and Wednesday afternoons in Swearingen 1A31 (cube at the Assembly Street entrance). This is a trial program for this semester. Based on usage, we will terminate, continue or expand this in the Spring.

CE majors, regardless of year, do not need to take ENCP 481. This 1-credit hour class has been absorbed into CSCE 490. That is

• CSCE 490 is a substitute for ENCP 491 and ENCP 481
• CSCE 492 is a substitute for ENCP 492

There was some confusion on whether or not this would happen but we can confirm now that even current students do not need ENCP 481 to graduate. See earlier post for the full details on curriculum changes.

The Fall 2013 curriculum and degree guidesheets are now posted: CS, CE, and CIS. The significant changes from last year's requirements are:

1. The CS major has dropped the CSCE 200-level elective requirement.
2. The CIS major has replaced the CSCE 200-level elective requirement with CSCE 201.
3. The CE major now requires CSCE 490/CSCE 492 instead of ENCP 481/ENCP 491/ENCP 492.
4. CSCE 374 has changed its number to CSCE 274, changed its pre-requisites to just CSCE 146, and should now be taken a semester earlier by CE majors.

As always, current students can use these requirements if they desire.

I just wanted to let you all know that we are working on processing your requests. The new registration system has slowed the process a little, but now we should be able to address these issues. As the first steps in handling all of these we have initiated the process of creating:

1. A new section of CSCE 211, late afternoon TTH,
2. A new section of CSCE 240, late afternoon TTH,
3. A larger room for CSCE 490 (=ENCP 491)

We will address all of the requests as quickly as we can make decisions. We are just starting with the most commonly occurring ones. Computer Engineering majors will note that ENCP 491 is not being offered. This class has been replaced with CSCE 490. If you are a CE major and want to use the old curriculum sheets, which list ENCP 481, ENCP 490, ENCP 492 as a requirement, then you will need to take CSCE 490, CSCE 492. CE majors no longer need to take ENCP 481. Starting with the Fall 2013 curriculum (to appear) ENCP 481 has been dropped from the Computer Engineering major. It will only require CSCE 490, CSCE 492.
