Position Summary

Terrace is hiring a part-time full stack software engineer to work directly with the founder on the design and development of new customer-facing features within the Terrace platform. This is a full stack role. You will work across the entire application: the user interface growers interact with, the data model behind it, and the deployment that puts it in front of customers. This is a paid, part-time W-2 position with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. Strong performers will be considered for a paid full-time internship in Spring 2027.

About Terrace

Terrace builds operations software for the green industry, serving wholesale nurseries, greenhouse growers, and sod farms. Our customers manage orders, inventory, production, deliveries, and invoicing, much of it still handled on spreadsheets or legacy desktop systems. Terrace is an early-stage company with paying customers and an established product, currently expanding its core feature set.

Responsibilities

This role spans the full stack. You will be responsible for taking features from concept to production, including:

• Front end: Build and maintain customer-facing interfaces in React across orders, inventory, scheduling, and reporting
• Back end: Implement functionality in Firebase, including Firestore data modeling, Cloud Functions, authentication, and permissions
• Interface design: Contribute to the layout, flow, and usability of the features you build
• Translate loosely defined feature concepts into production-ready functionality
• Refine existing features based on direct customer feedback
• Participate in regular working sessions with the founder to review progress and set priorities

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated working experience with React (JavaScript) and Expo
• Demonstrated working experience with Firebase, including Firestore, Authentication, and Cloud Functions
• Comfort working across both front end and back end
• Ability to work independently and carry a feature from concept through deployment
• Consistent availability of at least 10 hours per week
• A portfolio, code repository, or other evidence of completed work
• Legal authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or professional experience in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
• Familiarity with agriculture, horticulture, or field operations software is a plus
• Design experience is a significant plus: Any background in UI or UX design, interface layout, design systems. If you have an eye for how software should look and feel, please include design work in your application.

Note on experience level: Terrace evaluates candidates on demonstrated ability rather than years of experience. Current students and early-career engineers are encouraged to apply.

Compensation and Terms

• Pay: $25.00 to $32.00 per hour, commensurate with demonstrated experience
• Classification: Part-time W-2 employee, paid hourly
• Schedule: Part-time, minimum 10 hours per week, flexible hours
• Location: Remote. Candidates must reside in or near Columbia, South Carolina and be available for occasional in-person meetings.
• Future opportunity: Possible transition to a paid full-time internship in Spring 2027
