Attention graduate students in data science or biomedical fields: the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have several upcoming summer research opportunities for graduate students who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. NIH considers biomedical research to encompass health-related work done in a wide range of fields, including behavioral and social sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics.

Graduate Summer Opportunities to Advance Research Program (G-SOAR) – Due December 17, 2021

G-SOAR is a paid full-time summer internship for students who will begin or are in the first or second year of a biomedical PhD program. Interns work with a research mentor in the NIH Intramural Research Program on basic, translational, and clinical research. Additionally, interns participate in a program designed to prepare participants for success in graduate school and biomedical careers. Internships take place from June 6 through August 12 at the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Interns receive a monthly stipend of $2,800 - $3,780 (depending on level of education).

Graduate Data Science Summer Program (GDSSP) – Due January 14, 2022

The GDSSP is a paid full-time summer internship for master’s students in data science or computer science programs interested in applying their computational skills to address biomedical research problems. Internships take place from June 6 through August 12 at the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Interns receive a monthly stipend of $2,800 - $3,780 (depending on level of education).

Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP) – Due March 1, 2022

SIP is a paid full-time summer internship for students enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree program. Interns participate in 8-week programs at an NIH facility (locations vary) conducting biomedical research alongside leading scientists. Stipend amounts vary based on level of education.
